Evolution of Palaeozoic ammonoid sutures

چکیده

The history of the appearance and evolution of the suture, one of the major structural elements of the shells of ammonoids (a subclass of Cephalopoda), is briefly discussed. Its morphology is considered in the Devonian Anarcestida, the first members of which are very similar to the ancestral Bactritoidea, in the Late Devonian Clymeniida, the Devonian–Permian Tornoceratida, the Carboniferous–Permian Prolecanitida and Goniatitida, and the Permian Ceratitida. Three major trends in the evolution of the suture are recognized in the order Goniatitida, which were instrumental in the subdivision of this order into suborders. Variations of elements of the sutures allow the recognition of the familial, generic, and specific ranks. How to cite this article: Leonova T.B. 2017. A key for the description of Palaeozoic ammonoids

Palaeozoic ammonoids have been described for almost 200 years. Since the first nomination of the Carboniferous ammonoid “Ammonites Listeri” by Sowerby (1812), styles and contents of descriptions have significantly been modified and completed. The numbers of conch characteristics taken into account have increased considerably, and external as well as internal characters were evaluated to form a ...

Thriving at high hydrostatic pressure: the example of ammonoids (extinct cephalopods).

Ammonoids are a group of extinct mollusks belonging to the same class of the living genus Nautilus (cephalopoda). In both Nautili and ammonoids, the (usually planospiral) shell is divided into chambers separated by septa that, during their lifetime, are filled with gas at atmospheric pressure. The intersection of septa with the external shell generates a curve called the suture line, which in l...

Pattern Matching: Classification of Ammonitic Sutures Using Gis

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is utilized to apply spatial analysis techniques to visually and quantitatively match ammonoid suture patterns for classification. The Turonian ammonite family Coilopoceratidae was chosen as the basis for this project, because the similar suture patterns within the family make species-level identification a challenge. A Coilopoceras springeri suture template...

Mesozoic Stratigraphic Framework in India with Focus on the Jurassic Geological Record in the Kachchh Basin

It updates the biostratigraphic refinement in the Indian Mesozoics with focus on the Triassic in Spiti, Jurassic in Kachchh, and Cretaceous in Kachchh and Cauvery. As an example, the ammonoid stratigraphic zonation in Kachchh basin inclusive of the new Oxfordian zones, as also the origin of the basin are developed at length. Also are touched upon the salient pre-sequence Paleozoic features as b...

Morphostructural constraints and phylogenetic overprint on sutural frilling in Late Jurassic ammonites

The functional signiŽ cance of frilled septa and complex sutures in ammonoids has generated ongoing debate. The ‘classic’ hypothesis envisages ammonoid shells and septa as designed for resisting ambient hydrostatic pressure, complex sutures being the evidence of strength in shells for colonization of deep habitats. Here we address the ‘suture problem’, focusing on the analysis and interpretatio...
